Aulis Sallinen is known as a clear-cut and purposeful composer, evident in his avoidance of unnecessary effects and the functionality of his compositions. Even more important characteristic of Sallinen’s output is honesty and respect for musical values.

In 1978 Sallinen was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize for The Horseman. In 1981 he became the first person to be made a professor of Arts for life by the Finnish Government, enabling him to concentrate on composing full-time.
