Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara liked to compare composing to gardening: in both processes, one observes and manages organic growth rather than constructing or assembling existing components and elements. Rautavaara received Wihuri Sibelius Prize together with Erik Bergman and Usko Meriläinen.
